Most sites need a page sitemap. Use an index only when you already have multiple sitemap files.

Sets the one allowed site origin and lets you paste paths such as /about. Leave blank only when every entry is an absolute URL.

Paste one canonical URL or path per line. Fragments are removed; duplicates and other origins are excluded.

Apply this date only if it is true for every entry. Leave it blank rather than using today's date automatically.

Legacy optional fieldschangefreq, priority

Google ignores both fields. Add them only for another consumer that explicitly documents support.

Include only canonical, indexable URLs. A sitemap helps discovery; it does not make a blocked, redirected, duplicate or noindex page eligible for indexing.

XML Sitemap Generator

What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a UTF-8 file that lists the canonical URLs a site wants search engines to discover. Each entry requires an absolute loc value; lastmod is optional and useful only when it accurately reflects a significant page update. A sitemap is a discovery signal, not an indexing guarantee.

<urlset><loc><lastmod><sitemapindex>

Create a clean sitemap in four steps

The tool normalizes every entry before it reaches the generated XML.

Choose the file type

Use a page sitemap for canonical pages; choose a sitemap index only to group existing sitemap files.

Set the website root

This establishes one origin and converts simple paths into complete absolute URLs.

Paste and review

Duplicates, fragments, invalid schemes and URLs from another origin are identified before download.

Publish and submit

Upload the file, declare it in robots.txt, then submit its live URL in Search Console.

What the sitemap protocol actually requires

These checks follow the sitemaps.org protocol and Google's current documentation.

RequiredAbsolute, entity-escaped loc values

Every entry needs a complete HTTP or HTTPS URL. XML-reserved characters such as ampersands are escaped in output.

ScopeOne origin per generated file

The generator rejects a different scheme, host or port so one sitemap cannot silently mix unrelated URL sets.

EncodingUTF-8 XML with the 0.9 namespace

Output begins with the XML declaration and uses the official sitemaps.org schema namespace.

Limit50,000 entries per file

A sitemap or sitemap index may contain at most 50,000 entries and be no larger than 50 MB uncompressed.

Useful when accuratelastmod reflects significant change

Use the real content modification date. Do not refresh it automatically for an unchanged footer or copyright year.

Google ignoreschangefreq, priority

They remain valid protocol fields but Google states that it does not use either value. Novaverb leaves both off by default.

Include the URLs that represent your site

Sitemap quality comes from URL selection, not from filling every optional field.

Good sitemap candidates

  • Canonical URLs that return a successful response and are intended for search.
  • Important pages that may be difficult to discover through internal links.
  • A truthful lastmod date after a meaningful content, structured-data or link update.

Usually exclude

  • Redirects, errors, duplicate parameters, noindex pages and URLs blocked from crawling.
  • Internal search results, carts, sessions and private account pages.
  • Multiple URL variants when one canonical version should represent the content.

Generated XML still needs live verification

After upload, fetch the public sitemap URL, confirm a 200 response and XML content type, validate every listed URL through a crawl, and submit the live file in Search Console. Novaverb can compare the sitemap against real crawl and indexability evidence.

Common questions

XML Sitemap Generator FAQ

What is the XML sitemap URL limit?

One sitemap file supports at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites should split URLs into multiple sitemap files and list those files in a sitemap index.

Should every page be in the sitemap?

No. Include canonical URLs that you want search engines to index. Exclude redirects, errors, duplicates, noindex pages, private pages and low-value parameter variants.

Should I use today's date for lastmod?

Use today's date only for a listed page that was significantly modified today. NovaBrain treats lastmod as a factual change date, not a freshness decoration.

Do priority and changefreq improve rankings?

No. Google states that it ignores both fields. They remain optional parts of the sitemap protocol for consumers that choose to support them.

Can one sitemap contain multiple domains or subdomains?

A standard sitemap normally contains URLs from one host. Cross-site submission has verified-ownership requirements, so this generator enforces one exact origin to prevent accidental mixing.

Does submitting a sitemap guarantee indexing?

No. A sitemap helps search engines discover and prioritize crawling of URLs. Each URL still needs to be accessible, canonical, indexable and valuable enough to be selected for indexing.

Where should sitemap.xml be uploaded?

Publishing at the site root is the simplest choice and gives the broadest path scope. You can then declare the absolute sitemap URL in robots.txt and submit it through Search Console.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. This generator runs fully client-side in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, so it is safe to use on private content.

Is it really free?

Yes, with no account. A Novaverb workspace is only needed when you want to verify, monitor, and track these files on your live site over time.
