How the six text metrics are calculated
The definitions are explicit so the same text can be compared fairly across editors and tools.
Characters are extended grapheme clusters: what a reader normally perceives as one character. A joined emoji or a letter plus combining accent counts as one rather than several UTF-16 code units.
This removes Unicode whitespace - including spaces, tabs and line breaks - from the grapheme count. Punctuation, symbols and emoji remain included.
The browser's sentence segmenter is used when available. Punctuation is a useful boundary signal, but abbreviations and writing conventions mean sentence totals can differ slightly between editors.
A paragraph is a non-empty block separated by one or more blank lines. A single line break inside the same block does not create another paragraph.
Reading time is a planning estimate based on 200 words per minute, rounded up after the first minute. Technical complexity, language and reader familiarity can change the real time.
